Fireplace FAQs
-
If you're looking to purchase the fireplace supply only, simply get in touch with us and we can take it from there.
If you require an installer, get in touch with us first and let us know which fireplace or items you've been looking at. We can then provide details of suitable independent installers from our recommended installers directory, allowing you to speak with them directly about suitability, surveys and installation.
It's worth remembering that 99% of our antique and reclaimed fireplaces are unique, one-off pieces. If a particular fireplace sells while you're considering it, there's no guarantee we'll be able to find another the same — or even something particularly similar.
For that reason, if you've found the one you really want, we can secure it for 14 days with just a 25% refundable deposit. This gives you time to speak with an installer, arrange a survey if required and make sure you're happy to proceed without worrying about the fireplace selling in the meantime.
If you decide not to go ahead within those 14 days, your deposit will be refunded in full.

Yes — and we actually encourage this if you're unsure about what will work in your home.
We work with a number of independent installers who are experienced in fitting antique and reclaimed fireplaces. To help us match you with the most suitable installer for your project, please get in touch with as much information as you can about what you're hoping to achieve.
Photos, measurements, sketches or even a rough drawing are all helpful. Please also include a brief description of what you'd like the finished fireplace to be, including things such as:
The mantel you've seen, or the type of mantel you're looking for – stone, marble, slate, wood, cast iron etc.
The type of fire you're planning – decorative, open solid fuel, gas or stove.
Photos of your existing fireplace, chimney breast and surrounding area, if possible.
Any other information you think may be useful about the property or the finished look you're hoping to achieve.
Don't worry if you don't know all the technical details — just give us as much information as you can. We'll then match you with the most appropriate installer from our recommended installers directory so you can speak with them directly about suitability, surveys, installation and costs.
To get started, simply email us at info@holyroodsalvage.com or WhatsApp us on 07391 159771 with the information above and we'll take it from there.

Yes. If you've found a fireplace you'd like to secure while checking its suitability, we can hold it for 14 days with a 25% refundable deposit.
This gives you time to speak with an installer, arrange a survey if required and make sure you're happy to proceed before paying the balance.
If you decide not to go ahead within the 14-day period, your deposit will be refunded in full. If an installer is unable to carry out the survey within that time, please speak to us and we may be able to extend the holding period.
As 99% of our antique and reclaimed fireplaces are unique, one-off pieces, we're unable to reserve items without a deposit.
-
No. Any installers we recommend are completely independent businesses and are not employed by Holyrood Architectural Salvage.
We provide their details because they have experience working with antique and reclaimed fireplaces, but any survey, advice, quotation, materials or installation work is arranged directly between you and the installer.
-
Absolutely.
You're under no obligation to use an installer we recommend. We're happy to provide your chosen installer with measurements, photographs and other information about the fireplace where required.
-
There are a surprising number of variables involved, particularly if the fireplace is going to be used with a working fire or stove.
Basic measurements can give you a good indication, and we're always happy to provide detailed dimensions of our fireplaces. However, final suitability should be confirmed by your installer.
If you're unsure, we strongly recommend getting professional advice before purchasing.
-
Survey costs vary depending on the installer, your location and what is required, so there isn't one fixed price.
Some projects may only require a straightforward survey, while others may involve a chimney sweep or further investigation at the same visit.
As all of the installers in our recommended directory are independent businesses, they set their own survey fees and availability. Please confirm the cost directly with your chosen installer when arranging your appointment.
-
Because every property and fireplace is different, we don't quote installation costs.
Something that appears to be a straightforward fireplace replacement can become a very different job depending on the chimney, opening, hearth, appliance, access and any additional work required.
An independent installer can give you a much more meaningful indication after discussing or surveying your particular installation.
-
This depends entirely on the type of installation.
You may require a hearth, chimney liner, chimney pot or cowl, fireback, grate, ashpan or other components. Your installer can advise exactly what is required after assessing your property and how you intend to use the fireplace.
We also stock and supply a number of fireplace components ourselves.
-
Every stove has minimum distances to combustible materials which must be followed.
For this reason, cast iron, slate and marble mantels are often particularly suitable as they are non-combustible. Some wooden mantels may also be suitable depending on their dimensions, the stove manufacturer's requirements and the proposed installation.
Always confirm suitability with your installer before purchasing.
-
In many cases, yes.
Gas fires can be made or selected to work with many original fireplace inserts. The exact appliance and installation requirements will depend on the insert, chimney and property.
Speak to us about the insert you're interested in and we can explain the available options. Final suitability should be confirmed by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
-
This depends on whether the fireplace will be used for solid fuel, gas or simply as a decorative feature.
We can supply various firebacks and components, but for a working fireplace your installer should confirm exactly what is required for your particular installation.
-
We don't currently supply electric fires specifically for original fireplace inserts.
However, many customers use decorative electric or lighting arrangements within original fireplaces, and we're happy to help with the fireplace itself.
-
Not necessarily.
Whether a liner is required depends on the condition and construction of your chimney and the type of appliance or fire being installed.
Your installer or chimney specialist will be able to assess this and advise you on whether a liner is required.
-
The hearth required depends on the fireplace, appliance and installation.
There are numerous options including slate, granite, marble and limestone, and these can often be made to specific dimensions.
We recommend having the required dimensions confirmed by your installer before ordering a hearth.
-
We have limited storage space, so fireplaces should normally be collected or delivered within the agreed period following purchase.
If you need us to hold something for longer, please speak to us before purchasing and we'll let you know what we can accommodate.
-
Yes. For fireplace purchases over £1,000, we offer free delivery within a 25-mile radius of our Broxburn showroom.
For purchases under £1,000, or deliveries further afield, please get in touch and we'll be happy to discuss delivery options and costs with you.
-
Holyrood Architectural Salvage supplies the fireplace and components you choose. The final decision on whether those items are suitable for your property and proposed installation should be made by your installer or other appropriately qualified professional.
We're very happy to provide measurements, photographs and product information to help them make that assessment.
