Large Ecclesiastical Statue of St John the Evangelist
An imposing late 19th / early 20th century ecclesiastical statue, believed to depict St John the Evangelist. Likely of wood and plaster (gesso) construction, finished to resemble marble. The youthful figure is shown in flowing robes, hands clasped at the waist, and head turned upward in contemplation.
Reclaimed from the Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Edinburgh.
Good condition, some minor scuffs and chips but all easily repaired. The statue was painted red at some point, and has been painted over in white. There are some areas where the red paint shows through.
This devotional figure would have formed part of the interior furnishing of the sanctuary. Today, it makes a commanding statement piece for a collection, interior, or garden setting (if sealed properly).
